Inspiring Greatness in Others

“Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that's what you have here tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game; if we played them ten times, they might win nine. But not this game, not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight we stay with them, and we shut them down because we can. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players — every one of you, and you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it!"

Kurt Russell delivered this speech in his performance of Herb Brooks as the head coach of the 1980 USA Hockey team in the 2004 movie Miracle. Though not considered Oscar-worthy by the critics of the time it was an epic scene of a great motivational speech. Some form of these words has been revised, regenerated, and resaid by coaches at the high school, college, and pro level for two decades now.

In CoreClarity there are six CliftonStrengths talents that are identified as Mobilizers- talents that push others towards a desired action, outcome, or goal. It is the smallest group of the quadrants with just under 52% of people in the CoreClarity database having at least one of these talents in their top 5.

As we wrap up the year and our series on Talents and Change it is worthwhile noting that change can not only affect the dynamics of these talents in how they play out in relationships (especially team relationships) but these talents can in turn dynamically affect the change. When they are at their best they can do what Brooks did and inspire others to push themselves beyond their potential. For more insight on that you can watch our Inpowered video on Mobilize talents and change

One of the best tools I have come across to help my Command talent affect change in the most positive way is our Inpowered Expectation Management process. Change has a way of going against the grain of current expectations. Many of our expectations can be tied to our talents. Therefore, we often don’t know what expectations we have of others until they fail to meet them. This can lead to a lot of stress and conflict.

The key to managing expectations is to first identify them because they are often unspoken or uncommunicated. Sometimes they are realistic and other times unrealistic. As you work through the Expectation Management Tool think of some of your holiday expectations you had both at work and with the family. Some key questions to ask: What was my true expectation? Was it realistic? Was it and how well was it communicated? Was it tied to my talents and putting me in a fault line?

One expectation I can guarantee will be met is the more you follow this process in mobilizing others through the changes of 2025 the quicker you and others will rise and respond to the challenges in the new year. So- this is your time. Now go out there and take it.
